How Hard Do You Go?

Writer's picture: Daniel T. FlemingDaniel T. Fleming

I go pretty hard at art. When it was poetry I was writing and performing new stuff 3-5 times a week. When it was rapping/MCing I was out DOING IT 3-4 times a week. Practicing, be that writing, performing or, as I have for the last 17 years, making pictures... The actual DOING OF ART takes all of my focus, all of my bandwidth. Selling art at the world famous Pike Place Market is also pretty bandwidth intensive. Don't get me wrong, I really, genuinely love the daily interactions with visitors from all over the world, but sales in an environment like this, for me, is performance. After 8 hours of "performing" my salesman part, I can be pretty exhausted. Loving your work sure makes doing it a lot less emotionally tedious but it's still hard. Being a creative is second nature to me, 100% natural and easy. Making art for a living is really hard work. It's also the only thing I've ever done that really excites me.
